Staying at a large property near Fort William gave us plenty of options on the latest MMC winter trip, and with 8 people making the long journey we enjoyed a variety of different activities. The training and acclimatisation phase of the MMC introduction to alpine mountaineering trip allowed us to practise moving together over a variety of terrain and consolidated ice axe and crampon techniques. We also practised crevasse rescue, spending as much time at altitude as the weather would allow before resting ahead of our alpine peak attempt.

This weekend was billed as an ‘intro to multi-pitch climbing’, but all the attendees actually knew how to multi-pitch climb already. The 2023 Christmas trip saw us return to the Snowdonia Mountain Hostel in Nant Ffrancon with record numbers! The club welcomed some new members along for this trip – staying at Ennerdale Youth Hostel. Perhaps the quietest area of the Lake District, it certainly felt like the wettest and windiest over this long weekend. It could not have rained any harder while we were scrambling up Haystacks. A lovely place to stay –
